Does a government-affiliated medical board certify the cervical cancer doctor? Patients should verify that their surgeon/doctor have the required qualification, training and certification to legally practice in India.

How much experience does the cervical cancer doctor have? Experienced doctors are usually well-acquainted with the evolving technology and have treated hundreds of patients that makes them familiar with the disease, and the complications that can be experienced during the treatment, making them more likely to achieve the desired results.

2.    What is the difference between a gynecologist and an oncologist?

A gynecologist academic study involves a broader look at the female reproduction which also involves the management and treatment of reproductive organs and system. Patients can visit a gynecologist for discussing basic health conditions concerning their reproductive organs. A gynecologist can also be involved in the treatment of cervical cancer.

An oncologist is a medical specialist who studies and provides medical care for cancer. An oncologist can gain speciality in three major area: medical, radiation and surgical.

Medical Oncologist delivers chemotherapy and other medications to cancer patients like immunotherapy or targeted therapy.

Surgical Oncologist treats cancer using surgical means, by removing the affected organ from the patient's body. They are also responsible for performing biopsies that help in diagnosing cancer.

Radiation Oncologist provides cancer treatment using radiation therapy.

Cervical Cancer, being a part of gynecologic cancer is treated by a gynecologic oncologist. Doctors who complete their residency in obstetrics and gynecology then pursue fellowship training in gynecologic oncology become qualified to treat cancer present in the female reproductive organs like cervix, uterus or ovaries.

3.    What are the special interests/procedures that some of these doctors are performing?

Simple/ Total Hysterectomy – is used for surgically removing the uterus leaving the uterosacral and parametria ligaments present next to the uterus inside the patient's body. The pelvic lymph nodes and vagina is also not removed in the procedure. However, the ovaries or fallopian tubes of the patients can be removed if needed. Hysterectomy can be performed by robotic-assisted, or laparoscopic tools which might seem suitable for the surgery.

Radial Hysterectomy – is a type of operation in which the uterus along with its tissues and the upper portion of the vagina near the cervix is removed. It can also be performed through minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy or robotic surgery.

Trachelectomy – aka radical trachelectomy is used for surgically removing the cancerous tumor from the cervix without tampering with the patient's ability to have children. It is performed by making a small incision in the abdomen or the vagina using the keyhole surgery method. In this procedure, the cervix and upper part of the vagina are removed, but the uterus is kept in its place. Later, a ‘purse-string’ is attached in the uterine cavity of the cervix opening.

Pelvic Exenteration – is an extensive procedure performed on patients who suffer from recurrent cervical cancer. In this operation, all the organs, vagina, part of the colon, the bladder can be removed depending on the areas where cancer has spread.

Radiation Therapy – uses powerful x-rays for attacking and preventing the growth of cancer inside the patient's body.

CyberKnife – is also a type of radiation therapy, that helps in delivering high-doses of radiation directly on the affected area without scattering the radiation beams to the nearby making it more effective.

Once the symptoms have been discussed, their aggressiveness will be questioned.

Following this, the doctor will ask the patient about all the medications, therapies and treatment they have used before or are still using for their treatment.
