Unexplained Infertility
Reproduction and procreation is a natural phenomenon experienced by most couples. However, some couples have difficulty conceiving that interferes in between their plans of becoming a parent.
Fortunately, advancement in the medical science has founded several alternatives that can help the patients conceive and become a parent.
As the name suggests, Unexplained infertility is a type of idiopathic infertility, whose cause remains unknown, despite getting a medical evaluation the patient won’t be able to determine the cause of infertility. Due to unexplained reasons, treating this type of infertility is a complex task.
Causes of General Infertility
Multiple factors cause infertility in men and women, some of which include:
- Regular Smoking – Cigarette smoke can cause permanent damage to the DNA that can affect the reproductive organs of the individual
- High Alcohol Consumption
- Reduced Sperm Production – caused due to medication or radiation damage etc.
- Blockage in Sperm transport – caused due to prostate diseases, infections, vasectomy or absence of vas deferens.
- Sexual Problems – (Ejaculation or Erectile dysfunction)
- Hormonal Problems – caused due to androgenic steroid abuse, congenital lack of FSH/LH or formation of pituitary tumors
- Sperm Antibodies – caused due to infection or injury or vasectomy.
Possible Causes of Unexplained Infertility
Unexplained infertility is caused due to abnormalities in the reproductive organs that can’t be detected by the current methods. Possible issues might include delay in egg release, that doesn’t enter fallopian tube on time, or the sperm might face difficulty in reaching to the egg, implantation fails, or fertilization might fail to take place due to delayed movement of sperms. It is often recognized that the quality of the egg plays a vital role in fertilization, women with advanced maternal age tend to have the egg of reduced capacity that decreases the chances of achieving successful and normal fertilization after a certain age.

Polymorphisms present in the folate pathway genes can also be responsible for causing fertility complications. Aberrant reproductive immunology like reduced maternal immune tolerance for the embryo can be a likely explanation of infertility. Some evidence has also suggested that epigenetic modification in the male sperm are also responsible for this unexplained infertility.
Diagnosis
There is no specific test to diagnose unexplained infertility. If a patient is unable to conceive despite going under multiple diagnostic tests for determining the reasons for his/her infertility, they automatically get categorized as an unexplained infertility case.
Unexplained Infertility Treatment
Finding a treatment for an unexplained condition can be a complicated task, that requires a lot of patience. In most unexplained infertility cases doctors recommend the couple to try a few types of IVF treatments to see the results. Patients can try the following treatments to conceive:
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) – is an artificial insemination procedure in which the sperm is deliberately introduced into the uterine cavity for achieving pregnancy via IVF without indulging in sexual intercourse.
ICI (Intracervical Insemination) – uses raw or unwashed semen that is introduced directly into the vagina using a needleless syringe manually. It is a natural, painless, and most common insemination technique used by people all around the world.
IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) – is an artificial fertilization process in which the sperm and egg are introduced in a glass tube outside the body. The ova is extracted from the female body and is introduced with the sperm, where it is monitored and observed by the doctors. Later, the fertilized egg is transferred back inside the same woman’s uterus.
