Padmashree awardee Dr Ashok Rajgopal leads a team of experienced orthopedic surgeons at Fortis Bone & Joint Institute in Gurugram, Haryana, performed the first robot-aided joint replacement surgery in North India successfully on a 61-year-old patient.

The patient was suffering from acute left knee pain from a couple of years. The surgery was performed using a NAVIO PFS surgical system.

NAVIO allows the surgeon to focus only on the damaged portion of the knee that helps in delivering absolute perfection, protecting the other normal structures present in the joint.  By using Robot-assisted surgery, surgeons can perform operation with enhanced precision, control, and dexterity even while treating the most complex cases.

It ensures minimum bone removal, natural anatomy preservation and showcases better post-operative outcomes. The robotic system eliminates the possibility of errors caused because of human movements. This helps in providing perfect alignment, which delivers longevity of the concerned joint implant.

“Robot-assisted joint replacement surgery offers the patient a huge advantage of the immediate recovery, same or next day discharge and minimal blood loss. It is extremely satisfying for the patients since it preserves all the natural structures of the joint. It is equally beneficial for the young people who intend to return to their active lifestyle sooner and elderly people who are at risk of undergoing a knee replacement” said Dr Ashok Rajgopal, Chairman of Fortis Bone & Joint Institute.

Dr Simmardeep Singh Gill Fortis Zonal Director also said, that “With advanced robotics entering the field of orthopedics, patients can now receive treatment in a manner similar to day-care surgeries. Fortis has always been at the helm of technology and a center of excellence in Orthopedics for patients from all across the world, which has always been a vision for us. With robot-assisted joint replacement, we are driving this leadership ahead and ensuring that we are at par with the world because this technology has been launched in India immediately after the US and we are only the second country in the world to adopt it successfully!”
