A 7-year-old Uzbekistani Patient reclaimed life after doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, Delhi successfully performed a heart surgery on her. The young girl suffered from viral Myocarditis – a condition that afflicts people from two years of age causing inflammation in the middle layer of their cardiac wall.

The girl’s body was swelling severely that resulted in water retention, causing her heart to become extremely enlarged.

Besides, she had difficulty in breathing even while resting and her liver has also enlarged causing severe disbalance in the functionality of her organs. Medical Professionals at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket used inotropes (drug) for stabilising her condition and further she was advised to undergo LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device).

The LVAD is a battery-operated mechanical pump, that is a viable option for treating patients with an end-stage heart failure condition.

Dr Kewal Krishan talked about the young patient stating, "Ragena was brought to Max Hospital in an extremely critical condition. Suffering from viral Myocarditis for the last five years, her small body had a compromised heart along with an enlarged liver with impaired functions. In order to increase her chances of survival, we recommended LVAD. After the operation, and to everyone's delight, she is recovering well."

Dr Krishan also added that "Her liver functions have improved drastically, and the swelling has been cured.”

LVAD, with continuous monitoring can provide a significant scope of improvement in the long run for the patients, by eliminating the necessity of a heart transplant.

Ragena is also the youngest female recipient who underwent LVAD in the Asian-Pacific region.
