Two children undergo complicated liver transplants in Hyderabad
The liver transplant doctors at Gleneagles Global Hospitals, Lakdi-ka-pul, Hyderabad successfully performed complicated liver transplantation on two children, Sai Ganesh, a five-year-old boy and Salem Devi an eight-year-old girl.
Sai Ganesh came to Hyderabad from Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh after being diagnosed with liver disease. The boy had situs inversus and also suffered from frequent ill health and a congenital medical condition in which the patient’s organs develop in a mirror-image location meaning organs which are normally located on the right side are located in the left side and vice versa.
Dr K Venogopal and Dr Balbir Singh with their team successfully performed a liver transplant surgery on Sai Ganesh, whose father donated his liver to him.
In another case, Devi a young girl from Khammam came to the healthcare centre with a chronic liver condition. “The biggest stumbling block in case of Devi came in the form of non-compatibility of blood group between mother, who was donating the liver, and the child. When such incompatible solid organ transplants are performed beyond infancy, the graft loss rates are extremely high,” said doctor regarding her case.
The severity of Devi’s health prevented doctors from using immunosuppression medicines on her. The challenging case was managed by Dr Prashanth Shinde from Gleneagles Global Hospitals and Dr Prashanth Bachina from Rainbow Hospital.
“They used a novel strategy of immunosuppression to thwart graft rejection in the early post-operative period,” according to a press release. Both the kids have recovered after undergoing the complicated liver transplant procedures.
