6-month-old Patient with Maple Syrup Urine Disease Treated in Hyderabad
Medical geniuses at Gleneagles Global Hospitals in Lakdi-ka-pul, Hyderabad performed a successful liver transplant surgery on a baby girl who was just six-month at the time, and suffered from a rare genetic disorder called MSUD (Maple Syrup Urine Disease).
The patient, Mythilli, was born in June to Mamatha Rao and Narsingh Rao. She suffered from uncontrollable multiple seizures. A variety of investigations were carried out on her by the doctors which revealed that the patient had MSUD.
Her seizures continued while she was put on rehabilitation therapy which included consumption of medications and following an MSUD diet.
Her condition was getting worse and she started developing hearing and vision defects. The urine of MSUD patients smells similar to maple or burnt syrup, and hence it was named after it.
The deterioration of the patient’s health because of her condition forced the doctors to take the decision of performing a liver transplantation. The liver was donated to Mythilli by her mother.
“The infant was unable to sustain normal diet, and there was a danger to her nervous system because the ailment was irreversible,” said Dr K Venugopal, the Senior Liver Transplant Surgeon of the Gleneagles Global Hospital in Hyderabad.
Despite being a complicated surgery, the outcome after operation shows similar results in adults as well as children, said Dr Prashant Bachina, the Pediatric Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist at the hospital.
“Since inception, 20 infants have undergone a liver transplant in Global Hospitals. We have 100 per cent recovery and this year baby Mythilli is the 12th infant to undergo a liver transplant,” said the Chairman of Gleneagles Global Hospital Group, Dr K Ravindranath.
