Doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital showcased yet another example of their brilliance by successfully treating a rare spinal disease.

NuhaMohanad Hani, a 19-year-old patient, was suffering from a rare condition called spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which caused blood vessels to tangle abnormally inside or near the spinal cords. The disease can cause permanent damage to the spinal cord if not treated on time said the medical specialists at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital.

At the time she was brought to the hospital, she had progressive quadriplegia — paralysis caused due an injury or illness resulting in total or partial loss of use of the torso or all four limbs.

It’s been a month since Nuha had been suffering from this condition. She also had stool and urine incontinence.

“On re-evaluation of her case history, we found out that she had an injury two months back, followed by quadriplegia and breathing issues. She took treatment for this in her country but did not respond well to it, and her condition kept on worsening,” said Senior Consultant of Neurology Department, Dr P.N. Renjen, at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

The MRI C-Spine of the patient revealed that she had longitudinally extensive hematomyelia (a condition in which blood gets in the spinal cord) with a central cord lesion (C7-D1).

The doctors also discovered via her DSA angiography that the patient had spinal AVM with C7-D1 because of hematomyelia.

“We performed DSA with Embolisation of spinal AVM along with C7-D1 on her. She responded well to the treatment and was discharged within few days after the surgery,” said Renjen.
