Corneal transplant surgery, also known as corneal grafting, is an advanced surgical procedure where the damaged cornea is replaced by a healthy corneal tissue (the graft). A corneal transplant may be necessary to restore your functional vision.

When the entire cornea is replaced in the surgery, it is known as penetrating keratoplasty, and when only part of the cornea is replaced in the surgery, it is known as lamellar keratoplasty.

Keratoplasty means surgery to the cornea. The tissue graft is taken from a recently dead individual with no known disease or any other factor that may affect the chance of survival of the donated tissue or the health of the recipient.

The corneal transplantation surgery is done when the medicines, keratoconus surgery and the cross-linking surgical procedure cannot heal the cornea.

How is the corneal transplant surgery performed?

A cornea transplant replaces diseased or scarred corneal tissue with healthy tissue from an organ donor.

There are two types of cornea transplants: traditional, full thickness cornea transplant (also known as penetrating keratoplasty, or PK) and back layer cornea transplant (also known as endothelial keratoplasty, or EK).

The patient arrives at the surgery centre where the procedure will be performed. The patient is given a brief about the surgical procedure after which he is taken to the operating room. The patient is then given anaesthesia.

With the anaesthesia induced, the surgical team prepares the eye to be operated upon and drapes the face around the eye region. An eyelid speculum is fixed to keep the eyelids open, and some lubricating liquid is put inside the eye to prevent it from drying.  In case of little children, a metal ring is stitched to the sclera which will provide support to the sclera during the procedure.

Why is the procedure performed?

Corneal transplantation surgery is performed for people with:

1. Vision problems caused by thinning of the cornea called keratoconus.

2. Scarring of the cornea from various infections or injuries.

3. Vision loss caused by cloudiness of the cornea called Fuchs’ dystrophy.

Who needs a corneal transplantation surgery?

A corneal transplantation surgery corrects several eye problems, including:

1. Cornea scarring due to an injury or an infection

2. Corneal ulcers or "sores" from an infection

3. A medical disorder that makes your cornea to bulge out (keratoconus)

4. Thinning, clouding, or swelling of the cornea

5. Inherited eye disorders, such as Fuchs' dystrophy and others

6. Problems caused by an earlier eye operation

Types of Cornea transplant

1. Penetrating Cornea transplant- The surgery is done when both the front and back layers of the cornea are abnormal. The cost of this corneal transplant in Delhi is quite low cost and effective as it gets performed using local anaesthesia in the operating room.

2. Lamellar Cornea Transplant- In this surgery, the surgeon replaces some of the layers of the cornea with the transplant. In a lamellar cornea transplant surgery, the selected layers are transplanted which can take in the deepest layer called endothelium.
