Patient: Henar

Age: 7 Months Old

Country: Iraq

Problem: Jaundice

Treatment: Pediatric Liver Transplant

Doctor: Dr Vivek Vij│ Director of Liver Transplant Surgery

Dr Rajeev Tomar │ Pediatric Consultant

Hospital: Fortis Hospital, Noida

“Baby Henar is a 7 monthsold baby who came to us from Iraq with parents complaining of him having Jaundice since 2 months of age. His Jaundice has progressively increased more so he also started failing to thrive. Because of his bad liver condition, he started developing complication which included him having some collection in his tummy,” that led to infections, said Dr Rajeev Tomar, the consultant of pediatric at Fortis Hospital.

When the baby came to the hospital, the doctors had two challenges one finding the cause of his problem and exploring options which can be performed on him.

After running a lot of investigations, it was discovered that the baby had Biliary Atresia. So, the doctors started stabilizing his condition by giving him nutrition, to prepare him for the liver transplant surgery.

“The father was accepted as a fit donor for the baby.”….. “It took 12 hours to complete the surgery. We took a small part of father’s liver and transplanted it in the baby. Because of the small size of all the structures and veins in the baby, we had to do a lot of modifications in the liver to perform the surgery. And after the 12 hours of intense operation, the surgery was successful” said Dr Vivek Vij.

“Baby required intensive monitoring and motherly care in the ICU. Finally, the hopes of the family were completely fulfilled in India, and they are all set to go back to Iraq” the doctor added.
