Country: Iraq

Patient’s Age: 1.5 Years

Disease: Extensive Jaundice & Liver Disorder

Treatment: Liver Transplant

Doctor: Dr Abhideep Chaudhary

Hospital: Jaypee Hospital, Noida

Dr Abhideep Chaudhary, the Senior Consultant of Liver Transplant and hepatobiliary Department at Jaypee Hospital, discusses the case of a 1-year-old patient who developed jaundice when she was only two days old.

The parents of the patient continued receiving medical care in Iraq. Then suddenly, it was evaluated that the young patient’s liver has stopped functioning correctly. And she was also suffering from a disease in which the liver does not produce bile, and it does not go to the intestine. She was advised to undergo surgery within four weeks, but it couldn’t be performed due to the lack of facilities.

When the patient came to us “she had developed Psoriasis,…she was unable to eat… unable to sit. She was only 6 kg, and her growth was stunted.”

On investigating her case, doctors at Jaypee hospital also found out that she has a heart deformity. So, doctors started working on managing her heart pressures.

Next, she was evaluated for liver transplant, and it seemed like the only potential way of her survival. Her mother donated her liver to the baby.

“Next complication was that the portion of the liver of the baby in comparison to the mother’s liver was small….. So we reduced the size of the liver graft.”

Then a two-stage procedure was performed for inserting and closing the baby’s belly after the liver transplant surgery.

After the surgery, the baby was kept in the intense care unit for 72 hours, and she was able to get better within a few weeks.
